Birmingham, Al: Night Life

Birmingham, Al
Bars

5 Points
The five points area around 20th St S and 12th Ave S has a fun cluster of bars.

Jclyde: Beer

My favorite spot in the five points area is Cobb Lane.  It has JClyde, a "hotrock tavern and alehouse" that boasts a huge beer selection and outside seating in the front and the back. There are a ton of beers on tap and even more bottled.  They have a menu arranged by country of origin and the bar tenders don't mind making suggestions or letting you try the beers on tap. Food there is awesome.  I like the veggie burger, sweet potato fries and hummus, but you can get a real dinner there as well as bar food. Oh, yah the back patio has a big screen for bama games!

Blue Monkey: Martinis

Blue Monkey has the best dirty gin martini and a piano guy.  This is one of the coolest bars. Its great for a big group of friends or you can find a romantic alcove with a couch to snuggle. There is a huge outdoor patio with trees and outdoor chandeliers that look like they came from a huge castle.

Lakeview District
Lakeview district is around 29th St S and 7th Ave S has more bars and restaurants all within walking distance of each other.

Oasis

Oasis is fun! They have darts and a ring-on-a-string game... i really don't know the real name of the game.. fuseball,  a back bar that opens to a small outdoor area and live music.  They have great drink specials and its tight enough space you'll bump into people and have to get to know them!

Nana Funk's

Once you shut down Oasis, head over to Nana's! This bar is open after last call at the others. They have a dance floor with good music and young people, not like white people in white high tops dancing to 80s rock from Chappell Show.  There are pool tables and a few tables for more relaxed drinking.

Avondale Brewery

Avondale's Saison is so delicious! I have been dying to go to the brewery, I've heard they have outdoor patio and its pretty kick ass. Anyway, it is definitely worth checking out!

Jackson, Mississippi: Hair

If you need a great haircut or good colorist

Looking for a good stylist to give you blonde highlights? I got a partial highlight by Vanessa at Barnett's (Banner Hall location) that was a perfect cool blond-- and she was fast, which I love. It was not too brassy and she covered my root rot-- it is hard to find a colorist at many salons who gets all of the roots! I have long hair and Bridgette gave me a great cut. The Barnette's website had a $20 off coupon for new guests. Check it out if you are in Jackson and need a stylist.

Oh ya, the place has a nice atmosphere with modern couches, ice water with fresh lemon and cucumber.  After shampooing, they wrapped my wet hair in a steaming hot towel that had been lightly scented with oils... super relaxing.

New Orleans, LA: Shopping

New Orleans, Louisiana
Visiting during a sub-internship at Tulane Medical Center

UAL
united apparel liquidators - french quater

UAL is so much fun. They  have loads of designer stuff to find on the racks. Mens and womens... Chloe bags, designer shoes... I found a Marc Jacobs bag in there for ~$300!
I found a Moschino jacket too!  There is a lot of affordable stuff there. I went home with a pair of Frye shoes.

Stein's Market and Deli

Lunch at this Jewish and Italian Deli here is delicious.  They have outstanding sandwiches and it is an interesting store with specialty meats, cheeses, drinks (including great beers).  I had the Foxy, which had roast beef, avocado, cheddar, red onion and horseradish on rye. Their shelves are lined with specialty pastas, salts, teas, coffees, craft beers and misc items like a gummy bear larger than a shoe (covered in dust, probably less gummy at this point.. nothing else is dusty in the store no worries). http://steinsdeli.net/

The Rum House
Great Margaritas!

This place has a great atmosphere, TVs at the bar, outdoor seating... the food is delicious and not too $$.  There is outdoor seating and the margaritas are so drinkable. http://www.rumhousenola.com/

Nonna Mia Cafe & Pizzeria

Love the outdoor seating! It had perfect mood lighting and great wine. I had a pizza that was hard to stop eating even after eating enough for a family of 12! Joke.

Cups
an Espresso Cafe
Lattes here are delicious and look great. The baristas are friendly.  There is a cups in the hospital, too, but both locations have three different coffees including one flavored as well as decaf. I'm not always a fan of flavored coffee, but I've liked the sugar cookie, snickerdoodle and am anxious to try white russian. They have outdoor seating and lots of inside tables; only thing this coffee shop lacks is a few soft couches.
